Pakistan vs New Zealand, 1st ODI Tri-Series: NZ Dominate Pakistan with 78-Run Victory

New Zealand delivered a commanding performance in the first ODI of the Tri-Series against Pakistan in Lahore, securing a convincing 78-run victory. The visitors showcased both batting and bowling prowess, outclassing Pakistan in all departments.

New Zealand’s Strong Batting Display

Batting first, New Zealand posted a formidable total of 330/6 in 50 overs at the Gaddafi Stadium. Glenn Phillips was the star of the show, hammering a breathtaking 106 off 74 balls*, laced with six fours and seven sixes. His explosive knock provided New Zealand with the much-needed acceleration in the latter half of the innings.

New Zealand had a shaky start, losing openers Will Young and Rachin Ravindra early in the powerplay. However, experienced campaigners Kane Williamson and Tom Latham steadied the innings. Williamson played a composed knock, registering a crucial half-century. Later, Daryl Mitchell also contributed with a solid fifty, further strengthening New Zealand’s innings. Despite losing wickets at regular intervals, the middle and lower-order batters, led by Phillips, ensured a strong total on the board.

Pakistan’s Response and Struggles

Chasing a challenging target of 331, Pakistan had a rocky start as Michael Bracewell dismissed Babar Azam for just 10 off 23 balls. Fakhar Zaman kept Pakistan’s hopes alive with a determined 84-run knock, but his departure to Glenn Phillips proved to be a turning point.

Pakistan’s middle order failed to capitalize on the momentum, with Mitchell Santner and Matt Henry wreaking havoc. Santner claimed three wickets, while Henry also struck thrice, dismantling Pakistan’s batting lineup. Bracewell bagged two wickets, including Babar’s crucial dismissal early in the innings.

Final Moments and Defeat

Towards the end, Pakistan’s lower order tried to fight back, with Abrar Ahmed smashing three consecutive fours off Henry. However, the task was too steep, and Naseem Shah fell for 13, handing New Zealand a 78-run victory.

Pakistan was bowled out for 252 in 47.5 overs, falling well short of the target. New Zealand’s disciplined bowling effort ensured their dominance in the series opener, setting the stage for an exciting Tri-Series ahead.
